Trip to the Med Station

We had our first trip to the med station about a week before Christmas.  Carter was playing with Mia's "sit and spin zebra" toy and somehow dislocated his elbow.  At the time, we didn't know anything was seriously wrong.  I automatically told Carter "you're fine" when he started crying.  I hadn't seen what he did and I didn't hear any loud bangs or falls, so I assumed it was nothing.  After about 5 minutes of crying however, we knew something was different.  The kids were already in their p.j.'s and it was just about bed time, and since Carter wouldn't let us touch his arm, we just bundled him up the best we could and I took him to the med center while Dave stayed home with Mia.

They took a few x-rays and determined there was not any type of fracture, however they could easily tell it was dislocated.  The worst part was when the Dr. took hold of his arm and popped it back into place.  It only took a second but those screams from Carter were heartbreaking.  After about 1 minute he seemed totally fine and was not in any pain.  They gave us a sling for him to wear for 24 hours.  They told me it was so he would remember he injured it and be gentle with it...sure.  They also showed me the technique of how to pop an elbow back into place, because apparently once a child does this once, it's more likely to happen again.  Boy, I can't wait to try and do that myself next time!

He was perfectly fine the next morning and seems to have forgotten all about it.

His mouth was blue in this picture because on the way home we stopped for a Slurpee - his reward for being such a brave and tough boy.
